But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Pastor Kerry 10

“Then Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan. The Samaritan – the enemy of the Jews – who comes across a Jewish man who has been robbed and beaten. Unlike the religious leaders who ignore him, the Samaritan treats his wounds. Loads him on his own donkey. Takes him to an inn and pays for his food and lodging.”

“Do you realize what he did? He loved his neighbor. Not in theory but in real life. In a real way.”

”This is what makes the Christian faith such a revolutionary faith. The world tells us to act in our own self-interest. To do well by our neighbor so that our neighbor will do well for us. This isn’t love. It certainly isn’t agape – self-giving, sacrificial – love. It is just a business transaction.”

“The Good Samaritan served his neighbor because he needed help, not expecting to one day be paid in return.”

“I once saw an interview on television with a woman who had won some kind of “Mother of the Year” award. She was the mother of ten children. The interviewer asked her, “Which of your children do you love the most?” I’ll never forget her answer.”

“She said, ‘I love the one who is lonesome, until they find comfort. The hungry one, until they are fed. The sick one, until they are well. The one far away, until they come home.”

“Jesus calls us to love our neighbor, not because of what they can do for us, but because of what we can do them for them.

“Jesus calls us to love our neighbor because, like that mother, we realize that all people are children of God. Some just don’t know it yet.

“To love our neighbor, not because of what will happen to us if we do, but because of what will happen to them if we don’t.”
